How to Improve Brain Function with Blood Flow and Detox Support (Part 2)

If Part 1 was about building the brain, this is about making sure everything you’re doing actually reaches it.

Because you can eat well, support your membranes, and take the right supplements—but if blood flow to the brain is compromised, you’re not delivering what your brain actually needs.

And this is where a lot of people get stuck. They’re doing the “right things,” but they’re missing the piece that ties it all together.

Blood Flow: The Missing Piece in Brain Health

The brain is incredibly energy-demanding. It requires a constant supply of oxygen, nutrients, and efficient waste removal.

When circulation is impaired—even subtly—brain function suffers.

This is why vascular health and brain health are inseparable.

One of the most powerful tools we have to improve this is movement. Exercise doesn’t just support your heart—it directly impacts the brain by increasing blood flow, improving oxygen delivery, and stimulating BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which helps maintain and build neural connections.

There are also simple ways to support circulation through nutrition. Nitrate-rich foods like beets and leafy greens help increase nitric oxide, which improves vascular function and blood flow.

And this is where the basics really matter—blood pressure, lipid quality, and endothelial health. These aren’t just “cardiology concerns.” They are brain health concerns.

Because ultimately: a healthy brain requires a healthy vascular system.

Lifestyle Is Not Optional

If there’s one place where I see the biggest impact clinically, it’s here.

Exercise, sleep, and stress management are not optional—they are foundational.

Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, enhances circulation, and directly supports neuroplasticity. Ideally, this includes a mix of strength training and aerobic activity—but more than anything, it’s about consistency.

Sleep is equally critical, and often underestimated. During deep sleep, the brain activates its glymphatic system—a process that clears out metabolic waste and toxins. If sleep is disrupted or insufficient, that cleanup process simply doesn’t happen the way it should.

Over time, that adds up.

Stress is another major piece. Chronic cortisol elevation directly impacts the hippocampus—the part of the brain responsible for memory. And over time, unmanaged stress doesn’t just feel overwhelming—it changes how the brain functions and adapts.

And then there’s cognitive engagement.

The brain thrives on challenge. Learning new skills, staying socially connected, and continuing to engage mentally are all protective. This isn’t just about “keeping busy”—it’s about giving the brain a reason to stay active and adaptable.

Where Supplements Fit In

Supplements can be incredibly helpful—but they work best when they’re supporting an already solid foundation.

If I were building a core approach to brain support, I would start with omega-3s, magnesium, and vitamin D. These help regulate inflammation, support neuronal stability, and create a more resilient internal environment for the brain.

From there, we can get more targeted.

In practice, I often use phosphatidylcholine to support both acetylcholine pathways and the structural integrity of brain cell membranes.

Acetyl-L-carnitine supports mitochondrial function and cognitive energy—something I often think about in patients dealing with fatigue or brain fog

For inflammation and oxidative stress, compounds like curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin can be helpful additions. Boulder Holistic’s Vitality supplement: supports Nfr-2 and cytokine balance.

And if circulation is part of the picture—which it often is—nutrients like CoQ10, ginkgo, and nitric oxide support (like beetroot) can help improve blood flow and support overall brain function. N1O1, Arterirosil, AngiNox Elite

But supplements should always be viewed as exactly that—support.

They don’t replace the foundation.

They enhance it.

Where to Start

If this feels like a lot, come back to the basics.

Stabilize your blood sugar.

Eat real, whole foods with healthy fats and a wide variety of plants.

Move your body regularly.

Prioritize sleep.

Reduce inflammation wherever you can.

You don’t have to do everything at once. But when you do these consistently, they will move the needle far more than any single supplement ever could.

The role of toxins in brain health

There’s one more layer that often gets overlooked in this conversation—and that’s toxic burden.

Environmental toxins like heavy metals, mold exposure, chronic infections, and other chemical exposures can have a profound impact on brain health. These factors can drive inflammation, impair mitochondrial function, disrupt neurotransmitters, and interfere with detoxification pathways. In some cases, they become a significant piece of the puzzle—especially when someone is doing “all the right things” but still struggling with brain fog, fatigue, or cognitive changes.

This is where a more personalized, root-cause approach becomes important. Identifying and addressing toxic burdens isn’t something that should be done blindly—it requires thoughtful assessment, appropriate testing, and a strategic plan to support the body’s natural detoxification systems.

Working with providers who are experienced in this area can make a meaningful difference. At Boulder Holistic Functional Medicine in Boulder, Colorado, this is a key part of how we approach complex and chronic conditions—helping patients identify underlying contributors and support the body in a way that is both effective and sustainable.

Because sometimes, optimizing brain health isn’t just about what you add in—
it’s about what you help the body safely clear out.

Final Thought

Lastly, brain health isn’t about chasing a perfect protocol.

It’s about creating an internal environment where your brain can thrive—day after day, year after year.

When you do that, you’re not just protecting yourself from future decline. You’re improving how you think, feel, and function right now.

And that’s where this work becomes really powerful.

Because this isn’t just about preventing disease.

It’s about building a brain that actually supports the life you want to live. Schedule a call with us today!
